Role Description:

Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Director of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for managing and directing all aspects of Environmental, Health and Safety for Metal- Food and Speciality North America.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and manage applicable environmental, health and safety programs for multiple locations.  Create a corporate program and assist plants with individual implementation.
  • Monitor and become knowledgeable of all environmental and safety regulations applicable to company operations.  Provide updates and modifications to corporate and plant programs as needed.
  • Develop environmental and safety program templates, training materials, and other resources to assist plants with implementation.
  • Serve as company representative to interact with regulatory agency and insurance representatives.
  • Create company and individual safety related goals and objectives and other measurement tools to monitor both plant and company progress.
  • Continually prepare and update program development guidelines, training materials, policies and procedures to reflect new and modified regulations.
  • Assist with administering Workers Compensation Programs. 
  • Interact with medical clinics and physicians regarding work related injuries, illnesses, and other medically related employment issues.
  • Research and interpret safety and environmental regulations and standards. This includes but is not limited to General Industry OSHA Standards and USEPA Regulations.
  • Develop and conduct safety and environmental training to all levels of the organization. Experience administering online (computer based) training.
  • Interact and communicate to Corporate and Plant management as well as all levels of the plant organization on matters of safety and the environment.
  • Participate in property and casualty loss control inspections with insurance carriers.  Assist with corrective actions as needed.
  • Prepare project lists that relate to the improvement of plant safety and environmental compliance.  Periodically take on role as Project Manager.
  • Create and submit environmental permit applications and / or assist consultants with preparation.
  • Perform formal and informal safety audits of all facilities.  Create necessary reports and track status of recommendations.  Assist plants with completion of recommendations.
  • No less than monthly report plant and companywide safety performances and other Key Performance Indicators (i.e. injury rates). 
  • Advise / recommend on the matters of personal and machinery / equipment safety (i.e. procedures, guarding, protective equipment).  Interact with equipment vendors.
  • Manage the Business Continuity Plan
  • Provide support and oversite for the Company’s Behavioral Observation Safety Program.
  • Perform and/or assist with accident investigations and corrective actions including root cause analysis. 
  • Manage the data in incident and injury databases as well as the users of their respective users.  




  • Detailed knowledge and hands-on experience of the General Industry Safety Standards (29 CFR 1910) including but not limited to Lockout/Tagout, Mechanical Power Presses, Machine Guarding, Personal Protective Equipment, Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation and Bloodborne Pathogens.
  • Knowledge of Job Safety Analysis (JSA), behavioral based safety, risk assessments, and other injury prevention programs.
  • Basic understanding of Industrial Hygiene principles.
  • Basic understanding of Hazardous Waste Regulations, Clean Air Act, (including Title V Air Permits), Clean Water Act (stormwater, wastewater, SPCC).
  • Experience administering a Workers Compensation Program.
  • Overnight travel including international (up to 2 weeks at a time).
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to wear steel toed safety shoes, hearing protection, and safety glasses.  Ability to ascend and descend fixed industrial ladders and stairs as well as working at heights.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of the organization.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited College in Occupational Health and Safety Management or related field. 
  • 7 years’ experience developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and health programs preferably in a manufacturing environment.
