Purpose of the Job: 

The Shipping and Production Planning Supervisor effectively and efficiently scheduling incoming raw materials and equipment production runs which encompasses multiple sizes and variables for our 24 hour high volume Valparaiso Plant. This position coordinates transportation to customers and warehouses throughout North America and overseas. This person will communicate heavily and work with Customer Service and Sales to resolve any problems or concerns.


Key Accountabilities: 

  • Supervises multiple aspects of shipping and/or warehouse operations including shipping schedules, loading operations and material handling activities.
  • Maintains inventory and product loss control, coordinates timely and accurate shipping and receiving, and ensures safety/operational guidelines are met.
  • Ensures that all required raw materials are available, prepped, and ready for upcoming product changeovers.
  • Assists in Evaluating forecasts/establish inventory levels for blackout periods.
  • Works with vendors to resolve any supply issues/conflicts for assigned PC responsibilities.
  • Anticipates/Plans for raw material needs – Order/Scheduling of RM deliveries.
  • Recommends and implements improvements to reduce cost and drive productivity in the shipping and receiving department and may assist in improvements in all areas of the plant as needed. 
  • Performs ad hoc analysis to develop and use reports that will assist in improving productivity throughout the plant. Prepares reports for management review.
  • Assists in coordinating the storage and disposal of recycled and Hazardous waste materials.  And maintains appropriate training to perform these duties.
  • Collaborates with managers and supervisors of other functional departments in order to meet the needs of the business and to ensure efficient operation of the plant.
  • Trains and instructs employees on work duties performed in the shipping and warehouse areas. Oversees instruction, implementation and enforcement of policies as they relate to employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices and Safe Quality Food (SQF) Practices.
  • Ability to follow all Sanitation and Quality Policies and Procedures, and report and follow through on any deficiencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer-based applications.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs; ability to lead others through change.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail, and understanding the emphasis on plant efficiency while ensuring customer requirements are met.  
  • Strong team player and leader with the ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines.
  • Ability to select, coach, develop, engage and retain a team of employees.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or APICS Certification
  • Five years experience in shipping receiving in a high volume manufacturing environment
  • Two years of management experience in manufacturing
  • Experience leading and following Safety/Security Policies and Procedures; preferred
  • SAP experience; preferred
  • Experience managing in a union / “team” environment; preferred
